Since I have started CrossFit I have seen a huge improvement in my strength and endurance; not just at the gym but with everything else that I do.
I grew up in Maine where I spent most of my time playing outside. I moved to Colorado after high school where I attended school and worked for a lot of years as a whitewater rafting and rock-climbing guide in the summer and a snowboarding instructor in the winter. My husband and I moved to Montana in the summer of 2018; which was the best decision we ever could have made
I had always been interested in CrossFit, but never had the courage to try. It wasn’t until I had some specific goals ahead of me that I decided it was time. So I started in August 2020. I had been working out on my own at home and other gyms but felt like I needed some direction. I also wanted to start lifting but had very little experience. My goal was to get strong enough to pass the firefighter physical exam (which I did); which makes me eligible to apply for open firefighter positions.
CrossFit and fitness on a whole has become incredibly important to me. I try and attend class 3-4 days a week and I also run, bike or ski in addition to class on my days off. It has become such a habit that I feel strange waking up in the morning and not going to the gym.
I have really fallen in love with CrossFit; I like that the workouts are planned and there are people to keep me motivated. I love the atmosphere; the encouragement from the coach and their ability to push me while making sure my technique is on point. I never feel self-conscious about scaling or changing movements, everyone works out together, but we are also all doing our own thing. No pressure to keep up, unless you want there to be.
I am an early riser. If it is a workday, I wake up at 4:00am get myself and my food ready for the day, get to CrossFit at 5:30am. I work 7:00am to 7:00pm on St. Peter’s Ambulance as an Advanced EMT. My work day varies quite a bit, somedays we are running from call to call and I won’t get lunch till 3:00pm, other days it is slow and we spend time training and working on other projects. If I get off on time, I make it home by 7:30pm shower, eat dinner maybe watch some TV and try to get to bed my 9:30pm at the latest. On weekdays I have off I wake up at 5:00am to get to CrossFit at 6:30am. Weekend days I try and sleep-in till 7:00 am, doesn’t always happen… I am currently in paramedic school, so I spend most of my free time completing school work and studying. When I do have extra time, I will spend it skiing, biking or running. I am also a big motorcycle enthusiast. I have a Harley I commute around on; you may see it parked outside the gym on those warm summer mornings. My husband and I also spend most of our free time dirt biking in the summer.
I have realized over the last year the importance of staying strong and fit. Since I have started CrossFit I have seen a huge improvement in my strength and endurance; not just at the gym but with everything else that I do. CrossFit has helped me realize that we are capable of more than we give ourselves credit for, if you work hard and stay consistent you can obtain almost any goal you set.
