IT’S NEVER TOO LATE. YOU’RE NEVER TOO OLD. YOU’RE NEVER TOO UNHEALTHY. JUST SHOW UP AND WORK.

In February of 2016 I got some pretty scary news with regards to health.  I asked my husband, “Is this it?  Have I reached a point in my life that I just need to accept this and grow old gracefully?” A few days later, he said we should do CrossFit. I thought he was absolutely nuts.  Ha!  No way.  But I was talked into just watching a class and that was it.  Between his motivation, my son’s encouragement and the GREAT community at FireTower, I committed to one last effort to make a change and take back my life.  That was March 2, 2016.

For three years, I showed up 3-5 times a week and WORKED.  I started feeling better which lead me to learn nutrition and start eating better.  Gradually everything in my life started clicking because I had learned that taking care of me was the most important thing to be what I needed to be for everything and everyone else.  And not only was I getting through my days, I was filling my days with things I’d never do before…and loving it!  Today I’m three + years in, 47 years old, and I feel great!  Oh, and I’m NOT going to grow old gracefully.  I plan on fighting it, quietly but fervently, until the end.

What I love the most about CrossFit is being a coach!  I believed in the philosophy of CrossFit so much that I became a coach for both the CrossFit movements and our nutrition class.  I absolutely love being a part of helping people do things they never thought they could and coaching all our athletes to become even better.

But, as a new member way back in 2016, what got me hooked?

First, is the constant measure of progress.  When the scale didn’t move, I’d still see progress in other ways.  Maybe I lifted more, or did one more rep than last time.  Those things aren’t possible unless I’m getting stronger. So, I learned to find progress in other places besides the scale.

Second, is the community.  These are people looking for the same thing you are….better fitness.  I’ve never once felt like someone was judging me.  As a matter of fact, you’ll find the class is cheering you on and encouraging you…not judging you.  They have become my extended family.

Third, is it is never boring.  I didn’t have to think of what I wanted to do.  The class is structured for a full hour and it’s always a different movement or combination of movements. All I had to do was show up and work MY hardest.

People ask me, because I’m a coach, if I work out all day long.  That makes me laugh.  No.  I have a normal work schedule just like everyone else.  But, my priorities are different now than they were before I started.  I know now if I take care of me, I am much better at taking care of the rest of the things in my life.  So, I still workout about 3-5 times a week for one hour.  At other non-work times, I’m pretty active outdoors.  It’s a rare day you’ll find us sitting on the couch watching TV and if so, it doesn’t last long.  I also take about an hour or so on the weekends to meal prep so I can make dinnertime convenient during the week.

IT’S NEVER TOO LATE.  YOU’RE NEVER TOO OLD.  YOU’RE NEVER TOO UNHEALTHY.  JUST SHOW UP AND WORK.
