 I thought I was signing up for a workout, but got a CrossFit family too.

When I was younger I played pretty much every sport and played trumpet in the UW symphony.  Went to college and the most athletic thing I did for four years was 12oz curls i.e., drink beer.  I graduated with a degree in electrical engineering from WSU where I met my wife.  I was offered a job out of college and we ended up in Helena.  Over the years I’ve tried going to gyms with mixed results.

I started CrossFit in Feb 2019 when a friend (Taylor Thorness) won a certificate for a free on ramp in a raffle.  Note: At the time I thought CrossFit was a cult of crazy people.  I still think CrossFitters are crazy .. buy you’re my kind of crazy.

What do you I like about Crossfit the most?  Hands down .. the people.  Including Coaches,  Nutritionists, and fellow CrossFitters.  It’s an amazing feeling trying a new technique while being surrounded by Coaches and other CrossFitters helping me.  Success is best when shared with others.   I thought I was signing up for a workout, but got a Crossfit family too.   Having my wife and kids join this year was the ultimate bonus .

I wake up at 6:30am.  Eat 4 eggs and 1 cup oatmeal.  Log onto work at 7am.  9:30 eat a Mozz stick and a fruit.  Work till 11am and then cook lunch.  I’m currently going through a curry kick.  Work til 4pm and then its time to cook dinner and spend time with family.  Tues/Thurs/Fri I Crossfit with my wife and oldest minion.  I’m usually in bed by 10.

Hobbies: Boy Scout Assistant Troop Leader (love backpacking and canoeing), Girl Scout Volunteer, Homebrewer, Gardener, and probably my favorite .. I LOVE cooking and making fermented foods/sauces.

Advice for new CrossFitters:

1) When I first started I felt overwhelmed by learning so many new techniques.  Ask plenty of questions.  The coaches and fellow CrossFitters have all been in your shoes and enjoy helping.  Your success is our success too!

2) Your only competition is yourself.  Log your workouts and challenge yourself to get better.

3) If you haven’t taken the nutrition class .. DO IT.  Even if you think you know what you’re going .. DO IT.

4) Be safe, but have fun.  Sometimes being silly puts a smile on someone’s face when they really need it.
