Joining FireTower CrossFit is the best decision I’ve made for my mental health. Tackling the “Workout of the Day” (WOD) with my FireTower family makes everything else in my life feel 10 percent easier. As someone who struggles with depression, 10 percent is often the difference between showing up for work and laying in bed covered in Cheeto dust, so the benefits are life-changing. The workouts are always challenging, but Jay and the rest of the coaches do a great job scaling the movements and intensity to my ability and how I’m feeling that day. One of the best things about CrossFit is the way it changes how you see yourself. I’ve always been “someone who works out,” but the coaches at FireTower taught me to treat myself like an “athlete by prioritizing sleep, nutrition, and recovery.” My advice to beginners is to go ahead and drink the “Kool-aid.” Show up to Saturday workouts, buy the shoes, follow CrossFit on Instagram, and shamelessly annoy all your friends by talking about your workouts. The more immersed you are in CrossFit’s whole culture, the better your results will be.
